The Best 10 Movies About Magic of All Time
So, we go in the top 10 films of ‘magic’ with ‘all time’. This is a difficult question, and of course the list, which will be contested by many.
What I was trying to do is gather a list of movies which films are magical themes and a very obvious reference to magic in them. Of course, the rash Harry Potter movies, Lord of the Rings trilogy, perfect, and even Star Wars could be considered. However, the desire to expand the list of mag-inspired or magically themed movies left this use as “too obvious”.
Sake of brevity, I also do not fully animated movies from this list, so that the likes of Fantasia, a sword in the stone, and even an illusionist (Sylvain Chomet 2010 film) were not taken into account.
I also ignored the television series such as The Magician Bill Bixby paragraph coached Mark Wilson), Jonathan Creek, the quirky 1970 TV series as Rainbow, a special Colombo, Midsummer murders, one foot in the grave of parts, which are based around magic and magicians.
So this brings us to the quick summary of some of the best magician-in-movies movies I’m aware of. Of those on the periphery of the top ten – not because of lack of quality, just because they are somewhat peripheral to the main list.
Passport to Pimlico (1949), directed by Henry Cornelius and wonderful performances from Stanley Holloway and Margaret Rutherford. This great Ealing comedy series contains the subway, where a magician of Masons from the Grand, lowered his case allows pigeons to escape adding to the surreal nature of comic moment.
Dead of Night (1945), directed by Albert Cavancanti Ealing is a great horror trunk, which contained a series of stories about a dream he was a guest arrives at a remote farm. The film was reportedly influenced by cosmologists Hoyle, Bondi and Gold developed the ‘steady state theory. “They were inspired by the circular nature of narrative films. However, the film presents the story of a ventriloquist dummy and less than charming. Ventriloquism refers to the magical arts, and thus find its inclusion here. History is the forerunner of who is actually in the list, Magic, starring Anthony Hopkins.
Thirty-nine Steps (1939) directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The original and perhaps the biggest highlight of the film version of which is held in a theater, where “human memory” is kept. The act of memory can be considered a subset of the magical art of Mentalism. Great Wizard Harry Lorraine was known to the world, not only for his’ magical act of contact, but also for his contribution to education and development of human memory.
Raven (1963), directed by Roger Corman sees great Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff as the medieval wizards magical duel deal. This video is funny, camp and colorful loosely based on Edgar Allen Poe poem Raven, and not the greatest example Corman-Price collection, but it was fun.
Night of the Demon (1957) Jacques Tourneur. This great film is an adaptation of the story of Mr. James’ casting the runes. ” Dana Andrews stars as a skeptical psychologist “cursed” by the Faustian magician looking and ‘cult directors Julian Karswell Nial MacGinnis paragraph). In a series of Karswell dressed as Dr. Bobo performing magic at a party for children. Which then results in a talk between a psychologist and a magician in the multiple frame designs and ideas for beginners bizarrists at. Tourneur never clearly wanted the audience to “see” demons. And a lot of ways I wish I had his way. The film will be even more terrible and frightening, the fear left to the imagination – again, strange magicians are taken into account!
Magician (1958) directed by Ingmar Bergman. The only reason that the film is outside the top ten is because of the possibility to be considered as “pretentious” when placed in the sense that I think it should be – at least the first 5! Max von Sydow plays a traveling magician and “magnetic healer” (harkening back to the days of Mesmer) involved in the story of prejudice, honesty and class system ….. and the whole thing is a multi-layered. Sydow is great, it is rarely says, and Bergman’s visuals are excellent. film is called “thinking man’s horror /. It is terrible and unreal well acted and directed.
The Great Buck Howard (2008) directed by Sean McGinly is built around the form in which John Malkovich is again based on Kreskin Mentalist.
Next (2007), directed by Lee Tamahori see Nicholas Cage as a man who sees a few minutes into the future and hides his talent, working as a magician living room. Cage is considered another kind of “magician” in the fantasy film magicians Apprentice (2010, directed by Jon Turtletaub) which makes direct references to Disney sorcerer’s apprentice in Fantasia.
Magic Man (2010), directed by Roscoe leverage over Billy Zane, who plays Darius, Magic Man titles. Billed as a thriller, the film has received critical acclaim. Since I have not seen it yet I can not comment – but maybe a future review of this list, you can see them on.
So, for the first ten
10th Duke Mag Excelsior in 1901, directed by Georges Méliès. It is a pioneer in the film industry was a magician before turning his hand to the Cine-Magic. He has created several short films, which is just one, but many of them are film versions of stage tricks that magicians want to be able to actually do it. He was one of the first feature film box Stop, time and repeated exposure. He is also a lot of hand-painted black and white film shot. A true innovator.
9th 1919 game Grim Directed by Irvin Wilat. Not the greatest movie to watch, but the magician’s point of view needs. Harry Houdini is contained in the title role of representation exploits escapology. Houdini, not only a great magician, but a businessman early cinema, but it’s pretty honest little lasting contribution to film. In this sense, perhaps, before Méliès This trick photography ‘has weakened some of the dramatic consequences of performance will be Houdini.
8th Lord of Illusions (1995), directed by Clive Barker, based on the novel of the same title. This film is significant for its magical references. Not only “evil” character Nix lead to supernatural powers, but students have them. One of his students, Swann, and Nix’s early death (before his subsequent resurrection) use their magical powers to become a popular illusionist. Staged magic sequences are well done, there is a cameo appearance is a huge Billy McCombe and the Magic Castle are a place of secrets. The basic concept is that “magic is a dangerous reality” is a great theme for a bizarre magician there.
7th Throw a Deadly Spell (1991) directed by Martin Campbell, sees Detective Harry Philip Lovecraft (played by Fred Ward), who lives in Los Angeles in 1940, where magic is commonplace. He was hired by a rich man to find a lost book – Yeap, you got it … Necronomicon! It is truly a Bogart-esque film-noir with the charms of taste, of course, by definition, then they are magicians. It is witty, fun and full of Lovecraftian references. Unfortunately, at the time of this writing, as opposed to continuing its sharp minor (Witch Hunt) is not available for sale on DVD.
Witch Hunt (1994) Directed by Paul Schrader. Continue Deadly cast a spell in which Holmes, H. Philip Lovecraft starring Dennis Hopper is fighting against corruption and evil magic wielding senators. Further, it is not sticky, but probably not as much fun as the first movie.
6th Great Kandinsky (1995), directed by Terry Windsor. This “made for television movie to be included on the list, not only for its charm and humor, but its sensitivity. Richard Harris (whose work is excellent) plays a retired life in a nursing home escapologist. Story revolves around the desire Kandiski” chasing Another secret, “not one” Final show. Mobile flight was found Houdini water torture, which is proof of the cult nature of an illusion.
5th Nightmare Alley (1947) directed by Edmund Goulding. Impressive movie, and perhaps one of the greatest examples of all time on film noir. Tyrone Power plays a “con man psychic Stanton Carlyle, whose trail of deceit and deception to be taken from rags to riches to rags. Of course, there are wizards immediately find a link to the artist, who used to go by the name of Rinaldo, but he was better known professionally, and now in the world of Fundamentalists “wide Stanton Carlisle. (1928/90). Stanton said, despite the numerous challenges that benign his real name and was not influenced by the film Goulding.
4th House of Games (1978), directed by David Mamet. Ok not really a magical movie, but his performance one of my all time heroes, magic, Ricky Jay. Ricky is one of a group of men scammers in this Hitchcockesque thriller. Mamet, as always does a great job in capturing the mood of the film explores human motivation and behavior. Ricky Jay is, of course, is no stranger to the big screen, a role in the film, bond, Tomorrow Never Dies,, Magnolia Buck Howard, prestige, and many others. It is, in my opinion, however, was his first venture on the ‘big screen’
Third Houdini (1953), directed by George Marshall with Tony Curtis as Houdini. This movie has a lot to answer that makes some of the myths about life long Houdini really “mythical.” His death on the stage performing “water torture cell” is not a fact, but the film certainly an allusion to it. “Brush of death ‘on the frozen river, the first implementation of a straight jacket’ Association dinner by Mag probably almost never happened – but the romance and innocence saves him time. Magic advisor on the film is Dunninger.
I think it is worth mentioning in passing that in 1998 he was a television movie about Houdini (directed by Pen Densham) and the earlier attempt at a remake of the 1976 biography, Paul Michael Glaser in the title role (directed by Melville Shavelson for television). The film Death Defying Acts (2007), directed by Gillian Armstrong focuses on Houdini’s documented interest in the media and villas, and he is really a vehicle through which other stories can be told.
Another Magic (1978), directed by Richard Attenborough and staring Anthony Hopkins. Hopkins in the film begins as a magician, but he sees the success as the stomach. Graphs are crazy movie, Hopkins association has its fat substitute. “This is a classic movie with some creepier overtones to alleviate what some claim to have, the slower sequences sentimentality.
First Illusionist (2006), directed by Neil Burger and staring Ed Norton. Rhythm and feel of this film is wonderful. It is a love story with some great performances from an excellent cast. Magic Board comes from Ricky Jay and Michael Webber. Eisenhiem Norton is perfect as a stage magician. The brilliant cinematographer, land quite involved, and perhaps a few surprises.
First Prestige (2006), directed by Christopher Nolan. While the wizard is a wonderful and addictive, in fact, “hope” and “romantic” Prestige is dark and deals with revenge, jealousy and competitiveness. Great performances by Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as feuding magicians, each with a “secret” and the story, which is a non-linear to the film entertaining and worth a little effort you have to keep up with the tangled web of intrigue. “Prestige”, the final film, which includes publication may surprise you. The intelligent script animates the emotional tension and rich magical reference (Chung Ling Soo, catch a bullet, water torture) to make this movie a must have for pictures. Ricky Jay appears as a regular performer on the stage and Michael Caine is superb as the builder of illusions – although I did not ask him to build me a bird in a cage away!
I can not really separate the two films in terms of quality of action, direction, and thus share the history of the first order removing less serious ….
Wizards (2007) actually deserves a gold star on the list. Directed by: Andrew O Connor and the script was written in collaboration with David Britland, Andy Nyman and Anthony Owen, and the other is a magical tour de force. Deciding on the beautiful world of wizards, magicians, see Mitchell and Webb shake the big one liners, a tribute to some of the key real wizards and knock some of the strangeness that is an integral part of the magical scene. Great Home Pat’s impressive, and most of the magic of ‘standing’ on a magic convention center hosting the competition in the movie plot was secured by a famous manufacturer of magic.
